Matt first started as a Remedial Massage and Shiatsu therapist in 1992, and has worked as a Chinese Medicine practitioner in Bellingen since 2011.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture helps the body to heal itself. Matt uses traditional methods integrated with modern techniques, to help create rapid change for pain, injuries, bad backs, sore shoulders and neck, digestive disorders, menstruation issues, mental health, and many other health issues. He completed over ten years of postgraduate study of the balance method of acupuncture with the world famous Dr Tan and his teachers. Matt runs a community clinic every Wednesday in Bellingen (since 2010). He is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), and the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (CMBA), and the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association (AACMA).
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese Herbal Medicine uses TGA approved Chinese herbs to help change symptoms in your body, associated with illnesses, and to treat the underlying cause of disease. Herbs, specifically designed for each person, combine into a formula for maximum effect, based on thousands of years of medical research and written records. Matt completed a postgraduate Masters of Applied Science (Chinese Herbal Medicine) through RMIT University in 2022.
Shiatsu Massage
Shiatsu is a dynamic body therapy that includes acupressure massage and stretching, to help restore balance to the body and mind. It uses trigger points, myofascial release techniques, as well as gentle and deep pressure using palms, thumbs, elbows and knees. Many traditional Japanese Shiatsu therapists were blind, with a reputation for an incredible sense of perception and sensitivity. Matt has studied and practiced various methods of Shiatsu since 1991, as well as written and taught Diploma of Shiatsu courses for registered colleges.
Warm Bamboo Moxa Massage
The gentle pressure of warm bamboo moxa rhythmically applied over tight muscles and injuries feels extremely relaxing. This technique, called Ontake, helps to soften muscles, relieve pain, and improve the function and movement of Qi and blood. Bamboo is filled with the warmth of moxibustion and rolled and tapped along your body, with a different tempo for each specific area.
Hibiki
This gentle vibration therapy helps to energise and strengthen your bones, as well as shake loose tight ligaments and tendons. It feels extremely relaxing and helps to move your body into the parasympathetic state where the body heals itself. Matt learnt this specialised technique directly from Nagai Sensei and incorporates it into many of his treatments, or as a stand alone treatment.
Cupping Massage
Suction cups placed on the skin help to lift and stretch tight muscles - like a reverse massage. The cups help to release muscular tension, for example, in the shoulder and back. They also help to detoxify the body.
Meridian Yoga
Matt teaches Meridian Yoga, using yoga to stretch meridians, breath work, and corrective movements. This is a blending of traditional yoga (Indian Hatha), Japanese Zen practices, and Chinese Medicine. The linage comes from Masahiro Oki, who opened the first Yoga Ashram in Japan. Classes have run every Wednesday in Bellingen since 2011. On Wednesdays at 8am, now at the Bellingen Citizen Centre, behind the Bellingen Neighbourhood Centre.
Qigong
Matt enjoys teaching Qigong - a powerful self-healing system developed thousands of years ago in China. Similar to Taichi, the art of Qigong consists primarily of meditation, relaxation, gentle physical movement, mind-body integration and breathing exercises. It feels very relaxing as you consciously balance and harmonise your Qi (vital energy) – reducing stress, increasing health and vitality as well as developing perception and awareness. Qigong literally means working with the energy of life. Fridays in Bellingen at 12.30pm, outside Bellingen Library, in the park amongst the trees (inside the Neighbourhood Centre if raining).
